Classes

The Happy Hound offers on-going classes for puppies and adult dogs.  You sign up for either the Happy Puppy/New Dog Class or the Doggie Life Skills Class and can join at any time.  If you miss a class, it's not the end of the world, because you receive a syllabus when you first come, so you know when that class is coming around again.  I like to think of this as "organic" training.  While the classes are not sequential, they are all connected!

We live if VERY BUSY times.  We start with the best of intentions to go to dog training classes, but frequently, life gets in the way.  The organic nature of the class gives you and your pooch more flexibilty while learning stuff that will make your life together much, much smoother.

  • Happy Puppy/New Dog Class

Saturdays 9:30-10:45 AM.  This is for dogs over 10 weeks of age and open to all friendly dogs.  (Dogs that are not friendly need to do a private session with me first, to determine if this class is appropriate or not).  All family members 8 years of age or older are welcome to attend.

We deal with the dramas of puppydom: biting, chewing, peeing, barking.  We introduce you to the skills you will need to continue to socialize your dog appropriately throughout her life (you did know socialization is a lifelong commitment, right?).  Creative Management plays a key role in this class and we get you on the road to critical behaviors such as coming when called, loose leash walking, and going to your (dog's) place.

The class is four weeks long, each lesson lasts for 75 minutes.  The class is ongoing, so you can start at anytime.  If you miss a session, you may attend the next time it comes around (you get a syllabus along with your training packet at the first lesson you attend).  We meet on Saturday mornings at 9:30 in Green Hills.  The cost is $100/dog.
  • Doggie Life Skills Class

Sundays 6:00-7:00 PM.  This is for dogs who have done Happy Puppy/New Dog Class and for older, bigger dogs, or for people who are not having "new dog" issues but want to get a better handle on basic skills that will ease the "ruff" spots in the dog/human equation. Each week will focus on three different behaviors (ranging from loose leash walking, to dealing with fear/over-stimulation, to coping with gentle restraint, and coming when called).  The class is ongoing, so you can start at anytime.  If you miss a session, you may attend the next time it comes around (you get a syllabus along with yoru training packet at the first lesson you attend).  We meet on Sunday evenings at 6:00 in Green Hills.  The cost is $100/dog ($80 if you are attending this within a month after finishing Happy Puppy/New Dog Class)

  • Other Classes (offered when 3 or more people express an interest)

AKC Canine Good Citizen (7 sequential weeks, $150)

Intro to Freestyle (6 sequential weeks, $120)

Really Reliable Recall (4 sequential weeks, $100)

A critical life skill: ignoring chickens (squirrels, bunnies, kitty cats, etc.)

Jake (Blue Tick Hound) demonstrates a critical doggie life skill:  ignoring chickens.
